Europan 10

The project is a territorial-urban category. The city benefits from a variety of rather unique features: its landscape, history and its links with the business services focused on design and creative enterprises.
The location of project is Kolding, between the town centre and Kolding River Valley.
The site of project is 17 ha.
The objective of the project is the development of a new district, and the creation of a new community, a new model of urban pacification, dialoguing with its surrounding, based on a transformation implement.
The proposed project consists in the development of a colonization process to reinforce the identity feeling of the inhabitants.
Nowadays the site of the competition is currently mainly used for recreational purposes.
The most important topics considered in our proposal are:
1) Safeguarding urban, architectural and landscape qualities
2) Preserving social diversity and attracting a younger population
3) Creating quality public spaces
4) Development and transport adapted to the sites
5) Integrating sustainable development and quality of life

The project site has a particular topography based on different elevation levels and its landscape, something typical in the Kolding River Valley context.
This area provides the best conditions for a quality development project: easy access, good public transport, public facilities and services nearby.
The election of our growing process is the result of the urban analysis done over the city of Kolding. Considering the different possibilities of city growing, we choose the model closer to the compact city model. We re-invent it, and through fractal geometry we implement the concepts of city density and intensity. This new geometry is inserted in the plot according to he landscape and the surroundings.

Our proposal talks about a fractal density. The proposal must meet with two conditions of sustainability and balance between the project patches.
Our growth system is based on the definition of the fractal pattern evolution in the existing city, and developed across the application of the sustainable and city model conditions on five steps:
1)Identifying and building the city and plot connections
2)Locating the collective and single family housing
3)Developing the rest of the program using the established hybridation density
4)Defining the main inside-outside communication axes
5)Deciding the classification model for free spaces
After those steps, the different fractal laws are applied to the plot.
The proposal is built on five different phases with a sequential timeline. Each phase has a characteristic typology, something that happens in Kolding. The density decreases between phases. The first phase is denser than the fifth one. It starts in High Density and it finishes in Micro Density.
The High Density, which is developed on the North level, beside the Vejlevej, is related to the more commercial or infrastructure areas.
The Medium Density, which grows on the 11-14 meters elevation levels, hosts the social and educative equipments, some of the unit, and some of the collective housing developments.
The South part is the zone of the river. This is the zone which shows that a city with a river must live with it. This is the part of the crossing routes to the river mouth and the city centre and it is preserved as a Micro Density area as a new kind of allotment gardens and leisure or sport activities fields.
