Hospital S. Juan de Dios has 4 S. XVII hospitality typology elements: two diaphanous big halls, men hall (ground floor and first) and women’s room (ground floor), and a central cloister between them. Then we place uses imposing parameters derived from their characteristics:
Showroom: accessibility and attractiveness to the public on its contents in ground floor, promoting social knowledge about the city of Orihuela, expansion of the exhibition halls of the church of San Juan and the Men’s hall.
Library: visual flow and separation from the main access in first floor.
Archives: climatological disaster prevention in the 2nd floor, due to its need for persistence and historical heritage, we consider it a jewel to protect in the top part of our architecture, the basement, its natural place, is damp and flooding, it is dangerous.
We respect some architectural elements that have a value in themselves, the exhibition part of the project. The rest of the proposal has a contemporary language. The existing part embraces and protects the historical. Downstairs, the cloister, the women’s hall and the main façade are respected. The building and the public space are understood as one. On the first floor the building invades the public space and it interacts with the square, the palace, the church and green spaces that surround it.
